Enhancing the climate for local economic development is among the City of San Luis Obispo’s top priorities. That’s not just a claim, it’s a commitment.

The City launched its Economic Development program in 1995 in order to encourage the creation of a diverse, stable, high paying job market and seek to preserve the quality of life in San Luis Obispo. This program has been enhanced continuously since its creation and is led by the only City-level economic development manager in the county.

In 2012, the City of San Luis Obispo, with the support of the business community created its first Economic Development Strategic Plan. This Plan, receiving unanimous Council endorsement, creates a blueprint for development of businesses and tourism in the City.  It includes an infrastructure phasing and financing strategy and continues to encourage the area's strong collaboration between the City, County, Cal Poly, and the business community in support of entrepreneurship and head-of household-job creation.

From business retention and expansion assistance to a quick response team for timely processing of permits and development review strategies, the City’s economic development services are intended to help local businesses be successful.
